Beautiful detail on the Alexander Macomb burial site at Congressional Cemetery. Macomb was one of the first military heroes of the young nation and reached the level of Commanding General of the American army. He was one of the first officers to receive training at West Point and is best known for his gallantry at the Battle of Plattsburgh during the War of 1812, for which he was awarded the very first Congressional Gold Medal -- they created it for the occasion!
His gravesite is one of the most amazing sculptural jewels in the city. It's carved of limestone so some of the features have worn down a bit. In 2006 the entire grave was completely redone for preservation.
I look forward to posting more images of this beautiful site.
